Written during the final years of Imperial Russia’s flourishing musical culture, these miniatures reflect the salon repertoire of the era. Today TWO PIECES, Op. 37 occupy a modest but valued place in the repertoire, performed occasionally by students and professional musicians alike as representative examples of Gretchaninov’s Romantic voice outside his larger choral output.
