Description: Alan Shulman’s Theme and Variations was written in 1940. Emanuel Vardi gave the first performance at New York’s Town Hall with pianist Vivian Rivkin, February 17, 1941. Vardi then broadcast it with the NBC Symphony and it entered violists’ repertoire and established Shulman as an important young American composer. At the request of Joseph de Pasquale, Alan made the version for viola, strings and harp in 1954. The piano reduction, by the composer, appeared in 1953.
