Description: César Franck composed the SONATA in A Major as a wedding gift for violinist Eugène Ysaÿe in 1886, who gave the first performance on December 16. Evidence suggests, however, that Franck originally envisioned the work for cello, only switching to violin when a gift for Ysaÿe was needed. An arrangement for cello by Jules Delsart has long been available, but it simplified certain passages and made some octave adjustments. This edition by cellist Emilio Colón, with the piano edited by Nariaki Sugiura, offers a cello version more similar to Franck’s original intention. Due to its cyclic structure, the themes presented in the first movement are developed throughout the rest of the work.
