Duration: 8 minutes

Description: In 1832, Rev. John Jay Shipherd and his student, Philo Penfield Stewart, set out to find a site for a new colony in the Western Reserve of Northern Ohio. At one point, they stopped and knelt under a tree to ask for Divine guidance. After the prayer, a hunter emerged from the woods and informed the pair that a mother bear and her cubs had descended from that very tree only moments before their arrival. Legend has it that Shipherd took this as a sign and the site was found! PRAYER AND THANKSGIVING celebrates one man’s dream and the continuing spirit which is Oberlin, Ohio. It was premiered by Oberlin High School Concert Band on June 6, 1987.
