Description: This challenging yet popular duo for violin and cello was composed Zoltán Kodaly (1882-1967) at the start of World War 1 (1914), but not played in public until a full decade later in Salzburg as part of the 1924 ISCM Festival. Its three movements are traditionally arranged as Allegro, Adagio, and Maestoso/Presto, incorporating rhapsodic folk-music gestures within a captivating and exhilarating duet. This edition, informed in part by Janos Starker’s own history of performing the work in front of Kodaly, has been edited by Starker (cello) and William Preucil (violin), in collaboration with Emilio Colón.
