Description: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756–1791) composed Divertimento in D Major, K. 136/125a (Salzburg Symphony No. 1) in Salzburg in early 1772 at the age of sixteen, shortly after returning from his second journey to Italy. The first of a trilogy of string works (K. 136–138), it reflects the profound influence of the Italian sinfonia while foreshadowing the remarkable maturity that would characterize Mozart’s later symphonies and chamber music. Although traditionally designated a divertimento, its three-movement structure (1. Allegro; 2. Andante; 3. Presto) and symphonic breadth have led generations of musicians to refer to the set as the “Salzburg Symphonies,” even though that title was applied only later. Originally composed for strings alone, the work displays extraordinary melodic invention, transparent textures, and spirited interplay among the instrumental voices, demonstrating the young composer’s effortless command of Classical form and style. Today, Divertimento in D Major, K. 136/125a (Salzburg Symphony No. 1) is one of Mozart’s most beloved early orchestral works, characterized by its elegant melodies, lively rhythms, and offers an unmistakable glimpse of the genius that would soon transform the Classical style. This transcription for full orchestra has been completed by Steven Rosenhaus. Instrumentation: 2.2.2.2: 2.2(opt).2(opt).0: Timp: Str (9.8.7.6.5 in set).
