- Chaminade, Cecile
Duration: 5 minutes
Description: Cécile Chaminade (1857–1944) composed Andante et Scherzettino, Op. 59 around 1889, adapting material from her ballet-symphony Callirhoë, Op. 37, into a concert work for two pianos. The two movements (1. Andante, in D major; 2. Scherzettino. Vivo leggierissimo, in B-flat major) contrast an expansive, lyrical opening with a fleet and delicately brilliant scherzo, displaying the melodic elegance and polished keyboard writing that became hallmarks of Chaminade’s music. Chaminade later returned to the music, issuing a version for solo piano as Op. 59a in 1913. Today, Andante et Scherzettino, Op. 59 occupies a relatively specialized place in Chaminade’s repertoire, considerably less familiar than such works as the Concertstück, Op. 40, or Concertino for flute, Op. 107, but its continued availability in modern editions and performances reflects the broader revival of interest in Chaminade’s substantial output. For two-piano performers in particular, its combination of Romantic lyricism and graceful virtuosity writing makes it an attractive example of the sophisticated salon and concert music that brought Chaminade international recognition during her lifetime.
