12 Traditional Carols from Herefordshire
Composers:
    Arrangers:
    • Vaughan Williams, Ralph/ Ella Mary Leather
    Detailed Instrumentation: Voice and Piano

Description: These traditional carols were collected by Editors Ralph Vaughan Williams and Ella Mary Leather in the neighborhood of Weobley in Herefordshire. The object of this volume is not scientific but artistic; it is simply to preserve these carols in a form in which they can be sung by those who value traditional songs and melodies. The melodies in this volume, therefore, remain exactly as they were sung to the Editors, who then only added a simple accompaniment for piano and (as an alternative) a harmonization in four parts for choral singing, though the accompaniment may be dispensed with in all cases. Included: 1. The Holy Well (1st Version); 2. The Holy Well (2nd Version); 3. Christmas Now Is Drawing Near at Hand; 4. Joseph and Mary (to the tune of “There Is a Fountain”); 5. The Angel Gabriel; 6. God Rest You Merry, Gentlemen; 7. New Year’s Carol; 8. On Christmas Day; 9. Dives and Lazarus; 10. The Miraculous Harvest (or The Carnal and the Crane); 11. The Saviour’s Love; 12. The Seven Virgins (or Under the Leaves). Reprint edition.
