Description: Premiered at La Scala in Milan on January 20, 1892, LA WALLY is the final opera by Italian composer Alfredo Catalani (1854–1893), with a libretto by Luigi Illica, adapted from Wilhelmine von Hillern’s novel “Die Geier-Wally.” Set in the dramatic alpine landscape of Tyrol, the opera tells the story of Wally, a fiercely independent young woman who defies social and familial expectations for the sake of love. Torn between her passion for the huntsman Hagenbach and the rigid demands of her father, Wally ultimately follows her heart, but tragedy ensues when a reconciliation between the lovers is cut short by an avalanche. Rich in lyrical beauty and evocative of the natural world, LA WALLY remains a lesser-known work in the standard repertoire, but it continues to be admired for its emotional intensity and lush orchestration. The most enduring excerpt from the opera is the aria “Ebben? Ne andrò lontana”, sung by Wally in the first act as she prepares to leave her home and face an uncertain future. With its hauntingly simple melody and heartfelt expression of solitude and resolve, the aria has transcended the opera itself, becoming a beloved concert piece and widely recognized through its use in film and media. Its poignant beauty captures the essence of Wally’s inner strength and longing, and continues to resonate with audiences as a powerful expression of farewell and emotional independence.Instrumentation: 2+Picc.2.2.2: 3*.2.0.0: Timp: Hp: Str (4.4.3.3.3 in set): Solo Sop. (*Horn 3 is optional, playing only 2 notes that are in unison with Horn 2.) Reprint edition.
