Description: Suite Pastorale was assembled in 1888 by Emmanuel Chabrier (1841–1894) as an orchestral transcription of four movements from his earlier piano collection Pièces pittoresques (1881): “Idylle,” “Danse villageoise,” “Sous-bois,” and “Scherzo-valse.” The work emerged during a period when French composers were increasingly exploring fresh orchestral textures that would soon influence figures such as Debussy and Ravel. The Suite Pastorale was premiered in 1888 in Paris and quickly gained popularity. The Suite pastorale remains Chabrier’s most frequently performed orchestral work after España, and is considered an early example of the refined orchestral color that helped shape the later French orchestral tradition. Instrumentation: 2(2nd dPicc).1.2.2: 2.0+2.3.0: Timp.Perc(2-3): Hp(opt): Str (9.8.7.6.5 in set). Reprint edition.
