Description: Josef Strauss (1827–1870) composed FRIEDENSPALMEN WALZER (PALMS OF PEACE), Op. 207 in 1866, in the aftermath of the Austrian army’s defeat at the Battle of Königgrätz and the peace settlement that followed. The title reflects the mood of relief, war-weariness, and the hopeful yearning for a return to tranquility among the populace of Vienna. FRIEDENSPALMEN WALZER has been increasingly recognized as an eloquent and somewhat under-appreciated work among Josef Strauss’s many Waltzes, valued for its balance of melancholy and joy. In contemporary repertoire it appears in orchestral concerts, sometimes in New Year’s programs (notably in Vienna), as conductors and orchestras seek to broaden exposure to works beyond the Strauss II canon. Instrumentation: 1+Picc.2.1+ECl.2: 4.2.1.0: Timp.Perc(1): Hp: Str (9.8.7.6.5 in set): Pno Cond Sc in set. Reprint edition.
