Description: The ballet DON JUAN OU LE FESTIN DE PIERRE (DON JUAN, OR THE STONE GUEST’S BANQUET), Wq. 52 was written by Christoph Willibald von Gluck (1714-1787) in 1761 to a libretto by Ranieri de’ Calzabigi,and with choreography by Gasparo Angiolini. A work that innovated ballet with a more coherent narrative element just one year before Gluck’s ORFEO ED EURIDICE innovated, DON JUAN tells the story of Don Juan’s descent into Hell after he had killed his inamorata’s father in a duel. The ballet premiered on October 17, 1761 at the Theater am Kärntnertor in Vienna. Instrumentation: 2.2.0.2: 2.0.1.0: Str (9.8.7.6.5 in set). This suite was completed by A.F. Hermann Kretzschmar in 1895 and includes the following movements: 1. Overture; Andante grazioso; 2. Brillante; Allegro risoluto; Allegretto tranquillo; 3. Allegro molto; Grazioso; 4. Finale – Larghetto e Allegro non troppo. Reprint edition.
