Description: ADAGIO NACH KELTISCHEN MELODIEN, Op. 56 (ADAGIO ON CELTIC MELODIES) was composed in 1880 by Max Bruch (1838–1920) during the years when he was deeply engaged with folk-inspired material, particularly while serving as conductor of the Liverpool Philharmonic Society. Drawing on traditional Scottish and Irish melodic sources, Bruch crafted a richly lyrical, rhapsodic work that reflects the 19th-century Romantic fascination with national and “ancient” musical traditions, filtered through his gift for noble melody and warm orchestration. The work was premiered in 1881, originally conceived for cello and orchestra (with a later, equally successful version for viola), and was soon embraced for its expressive depth and dignified restraint. Today ADAGIO NACH KELTISCHEN MELODIEN remains a cherished piece in the concerto-like repertoire for both cello and viola, frequently performed for its singing lines, atmospheric orchestral writing, and its place among Bruch’s most enduring non-virtuosic orchestral works.
